Alexander Wang is officially the new CEO and chairman of his namesake label, effective immediately. The new roles add to the Taiwanese American’s current one as creative director.
Just last fall, the designer left his creative director role at Balenciaga to focus on expanding his label.
Wang replaces his sister-in-law Aimee Wang and mother Yin Wang, who will both remain shareholders and board members after stepping down. The label Alexander Wang was founded by Alex himself over a decade ago along with Aimee, Yin and his brother Dennis Wang. Yin and Aimee previously served as the label’s chairman and CEO respectively.
As Alex’s sister-in-law and mother leave their current roles, yet another family member will join the business. The role of executive vice chairman will go to Alex's aunt Caroline Wang, who joins from IBM with over 3 decades of experience in information technology.
Incidentally, another Wang will be joining the company as executive vice president. The former president of DKNY, Mary Wang, is however not related to Alex’s family, despite sharing the same last name.
"I want to thank my family, Ying, and Aimie for their tireless efforts toward building the business we have today," said Alex in a statement. "The business side has always come naturally to me, and with my full-time return to New York, I want to focus on my brand’s strategic growth.
“Now is the right time to fully synchronize the creative and business aspects of the company and to continue strengthening the dialogue we have with our customers. It has always been my goal to create brand value, and to be a brand with integrity and purpose."
