With the re-opening of Barneys New York in downtown, the luxury retailer has partnered with White Columns and the LGBT Community Center for The Black Leather Jacket auction. The auction pays homage to the 1986 Barneys New York Decorated Denim event, in which Barneys New York auctioned off customized denim jackets designed by prominent designers and artists to benefit an AIDS charity. This time around, the denim jackets have been swapped out for 23 one-of-a-kind leather motorcycle jackets, created by artists like Kim Gordon, Helmut Lang, Glenn Ligon, Marilyn Minter, Sterling Ruby as well as designers Azzedine Alaïa, Joseph Altuzarra, Tim Coppens, Isabel Marant, Dries Van Noten, Givenchy by Riccardo Tisci, and Alexander Wang. Proceeds from The Black Leather Jacket auction will go to two New York City non-profit institutions: The LGBT Community Center and White Columns, New York City’s oldest non-profit art space specializing in emerging artists.
The auction’s going on now and is hosted by Christie’s.
