It’s 60 minutes until showtime and Donatella Versace is on a mission—although not the kind you might think. While racks of clothes hang in the background and models swirl around the dressing area, the petite blonde Versacedesigner is making her way toward Pat McGrath’s makeup station with one goal in mind: to get her hands on another sample of her favorite black eyeliner.
“I’m obsessed,” she says to McGrath in her distinctive Italian purr. Known as Black Caviar, the dense obsidian kohl crayon, which launched in December as part ofMcGrath’s limited-edition Phantom 002 makeup kit, sold out in a heartbeat—and Versace has been scheming to get more ever since. “I’ve never had a pencil like this. It’s black and shiny and matte at the same time. It’s couture. I put on a lot. It stays forever, it doesn’t move. I can use it as a liner or [blend it as] a shadow,” she says, gesturing at her own expertly contoured smoky cat-eye. “I want one in brown, blue, and green next.”
Unfortunately, McGrath has some tragic news to deliver: The laboratory that she works with won’t be able to make more samples for about two more years, although she does hint to Versace that she might be able to pilfer her a rogue sample for now. (Note to McGrath: Model Jamie Bochert, who is seated nearby, wants one, too.)
Until then, it seems, Donatella will have to make due with her other favorite beauty basics, which consist of “Clé de Peau’s serum and cream,” as well as Shiseido’s skin-care formulas. When it comes to perfume, she sticks to Versace’s Eros, but she also blends “pure oils of jasmine and fleur d’oranger” into her own custom scents.
“I mean, have you seen her bathroom? Legendary!” chimes in McGrath with disbelief. “She is the ultimate beauty junkie.”
“It’s true—I try everything,” Versace says with a laugh before turning back to McGrath without missing a beat. “Nowwhere’s my black pencil?”
