Every day of every month at GQ, we start your morning on Instagram with visual advice on What to Wear Today. But we want to go deeper. Give you the nuts and bolts of how to get the look into your wardrobe. Today we're talking about Oscar Isaac's genius layering trick that'll make wearing a suit this winter cozier than staying in bed (and a lot more stylish).
Around mid February, getting dressed in the morning hits peak doldrum, as the longest part of winter begins. It's the familiar drawn-out waiting game marked by slush, biting winds, and an uptick in snooze button rationalization. For the next six weeks or so, deciding what to wear each day might feel more like choosing a suit of armor than one of style. And if you wear a suit everyday, your daily uniform is even more susceptible to winter boredom. The good news: tiny changes to your office wear can make a big difference in both style and functionality. Take the Brunello Cucinelli vest Oscar Isaac is wearing here. Not only does it provide a lightweight layer of warmth for your core, it's also a very modern twist on the classic three-piece suit. Instead of a matching wool vest, Isaac is wearing a piece of stylish Italian performance wear. And though we obviously love the high fashion version (we put it in the magazine after all), we also love the numerous less expensive lightweight down vests available right now. Our tips: Look for one that's not too bulky in a neutral color like beige, gray, black, or navy. Reserve one vest for office and another for exercise. In other words, don't wear the same one out on a run that you wear with your suit. You want it to look crisp and new, not rumpled or worn. To make sure you look extra pulled together, go with some baller lace-ups and match the vest to your socks.
