Date: January 17–20, 2017
The Draw: An annual who's who of international influence, the WEF—which is usually just called Davos, for the Swiss town where it's held—is prom for global power players.
The People: From Prince Charles to Bono and beyond, anyone who's anyone has done Davos.
The Problem: Lax security. In 2016 a dozen Swiss soldiers posted at the WEF were disciplined for using drugs during the forum.
Date: March 11–17, 2017 (it's held 10 times per year)
The Draw: This nonprofit tackles issues from education to the environment through conferences, seminars, and policy programs.
The People: Board members include Madeleine Albright and Katie Couric.
The Problem: Nothing—unless you believe those websites claiming it's a front for the Illuminati.
Date: April 24–28, 2017
The Draw: Vancouver's ever-expanding conference focused on technology, entertainment, and design showcases experts sharing observations and giving speeches about careers and "modes of success."
The People: Bill Clinton, Bill Gates, Bono…and that's just the Bs.
The Problem: "Have you seen my TED talk?" has become this century's most obvious humblebrag.
Date: 2017 dates not yet announced
The Draw: Dubbed "Burning Man for the one percent," this Nevada festival similarly features music and costumes but also juice bars, yoga in the wellness tent, and lectures from Silicon Valley CEOs.
The People: The two-year-old fest has already drawn Eric Schmidt—in a top hat and mirrored vest.
The Problem: See above.
Allen & Company Sun Valley Conference
Date: Early July
The Draw: The 33-year-old conference mixes outdoor sports such as hiking and whitewater rafting with panel discussions. Each year members cover a new topic; in 2016 it was artificial intelligence.
The People: Warren Buffett, Rupert Murdoch, Oprah Winfrey.
The Problem: Feuding moguls are bound to run into each other. This year Shari Redstone and Philippe Daumon.
Date: Currently shrouded in secrecy
The Draw: A meeting to promote free market Western capitalism, the annual gathering of about 100 global luminaries lets public figures speak honestly without the presence of media.
The People: Bill Clinton, Henry Kissinger, David Cameron.
The Problem: Conspiracy theorists believe the shadowy group is secretly controlling world governments.
The Draw: The granddaddy of secret societies at more than 140 years old, this two-week encampment in Monte Rio, CA, began as a getaway for artists but now attracts business titans and heads of state.
The People: Everyone from Mark Twain to Charlie Chaplin, and both George Bushes.
The Problem: Drunk middle-aged Republican rainmakers in drag is what passes for entertainment.
Date: The week leading up to Labor Day
The Draw: Part Woodstock, part new age camp revival, this 30-year-old annual music and culture extravaganza encourages "radical self-expression."
The People: Everyone from Elon Musk to Katy Perry and 70,000 other annual attendees has made the pilgrimage to the Nevada desert.
The Problem: This year a group of Burners vandalized the private White Ocean camp, cutting power lines
What Going to Burning Man Is Really Like
Date: Early September
The Draw: The annual economic conference, held at Lake Como, attracts international leaders from the fields of government, business, and academia.
The People: Guests have included Bill Gates and Joe Biden.
Date: The Ocean Gala takes place on December 3, 2016
The Draw: Beach gatherings of tech entrepreneurs, 120 at a time, anywhere from Fiji to the Hamptons, for a week of water sports and networking.
The People: Elon Musk, hacker James Lindenbaum.
The Problem: It's hard to network in 30-knot winds.
